Immigration Update

Oct. 13, 2022

Immigration New Zealand have announced that expression of interest ("EOI") selections will resume for two popular visa categories: Skilled Migrant Category and the Parent Resident Visa.

Both visas operate by way of an initial EOI which is submitted for assessment by Immigration New Zealand. If the requirements for entry are met, the EOI will be submitted to the pool, with a certain number of applications selected regularly and invited to apply for residence.

Selections of EOIs for both visas have been suspended for some time - the Skilled Migrant Category since early 2020 and the Parent Resident Visa since 2016.

We briefly outline the requirements for each visa below.  If you believe you may be eligible and would like some assistance to make an application, please get in contact with our experienced team.

Skilled Migrant Category

Skilled Migrant Category operates by a points-based ballot system.  Points are awarded for categories such as age, skilled work experience, qualifications, and a job offer in New Zealand.

On 9 November 2022, Immigration New Zealand will select all EOIs with 160 points or more and invite those applicants to apply for residence.  The minimum points threshold will then increase to 180 points and regular monthly selections will resume from 18 January 2023.

Parent Resident Visa

The Parent Resident Category Visa is a pathway to residence for parents of New Zealand citizens or residents, who are sponsored by their adult child or children.   Applicants must meet requirements as to character, an acceptable standard of health, and a commitment from their child to sponsor, among other requirements.

Some changes have been made with the re-opening of this category, to increase the number of applications selected and invited to apply for residence to 2500 per year.  Sponsorship requirements have also been altered to lower income requirements for sponsors and enable 2 adult children to combine their income to meet the threshold and sponsor their parents.
